E-drug: QUININE SYRUP (cont)
---------------------------------------------
This seems to be a frequently encountered problem. A former student of mine
did some preliminary formulation work a few years ago but unfortunately the
project was not completed. Quinine salts are reasonably stable in solution
and I would think that a dilution of Quinine Dihydrochoride Injection in
Syrup is stable for about one month if suitably preserved. If you can let
me know the exact formulation that you use plus the likely storage
conditions and preferred expiry date I can compare it with the work already
done.
Alternatively we could re-investigate the issue. If we are to stability test
a paediatric quinine syrup it would be desirable to study a standard
formulation that could be used universally.
One problem with quinine oral liquids is their almost unpalatable bitter
taste (especially a problem in paediatrics). Apparently the ethylcarbonate
ester is taste neutral so would be far superior as an oral solution. Does
anybody have any information on the use and availability of this form of
quinine ?
Finally I found an article in Medline that could be useful. I could
interloan and send it on but someone may have this in their library.
