Medicines are an essential part of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Medicines-related challenges are often narrowly addressed as commodity supply issues without proper consideration of the health system and political aspects. This session discusses core challenges of medicines in UHC from a health system and policy perceptive using examples from four countries at different stages in scaling up health and medicine coverage.

Purpose of this interactive 75 minute-session are:

* To identify the core health systems and policy challenges of promoting access to medicines within universal health coverage

* To showcase how medicines access challenges are addressed in different countries

* To discuss core elements of national accountability in access to medicines

Presentations include:

* Asian Region: achieving affordability while ensuring medicines quality (Marie Lamy)

* Moldova: expanding medicine benefits while maintaining financial sustainability (Rita Seicas)

* Mexico: promoting accessibility in the private sector while assuring appropriate use (Anahi Dreser)

* Kenya: tracking progress on equitable access NCD medicines (Zaina Kiragu)

Country cases from different geographical regions are used to illustrate a key challenge of access to medicines within health systems.

This is a session as part of the Thematic Working Group on Medicines in Health Systems Global and will be moderated by one of the TWG co-chair Veronika Wirtz.
