E-drug: Re: Drug approval criteria (cont'd)
----------------------------------------------------------
The comment from the moderator Kirsten Myhr about Canada is not completely
accurate. It is true that a national Canadian body has developed
pharmacoeconomic guidelines for assessing drugs, but drugs are still
licensed solely on the basis of safety, efficacy and quality. Since
outpatient drug therapy is not included in the national health insurance
plan, all of the 10 provinces have their own individual drug plans. The
drugs that are included in these plans and the groups in the population that
are eligible for coverage vary from province to province. Moreover, not all
provinces require a pharmacoeconomic assessments before they decide whether
or not to include a drug in their formulary.
