E-DRUG: drug donations
----------------------
Dear E-druggers,
There have been some very interesting and valid contributions to the
subject of drug donations. I hope no-one is under-estimating the huge
pressure locally, in the form of political and social pressure, and
internationally in the form of political and economic pressure. The points
made so far in this debate suggest that, indeed, no-one is doing so.
I have one response to a recent comment and one question (again a
'daft-laddie' one).
Response - no I dont expect the IRS to check every drug donation
personally, but I do expect that there should be a check list that is
completed and signed off by a responsible person in each compnay seeking a
tax-break. That declaration must accompany the application before a tax
break can be considered, and the information, as with all information of
this type, is verifiable through audit.
[and maybe publicly accessible? WB]
Question - has there been any work done, published or otherwise, on the
nett effect of stopping all these donations? We hear of the costs, direct
and indirect, of poor donations. We hear of fears associated with the loss
of the donation process. I hear cries from the heart of the need for good
medicines from amongst the rubbish in the donated piles. I hear the
anquish about the dangers of the use of these inappropriate and often
downright bad drugs. Has any of it been put together to see the overall
effect and to estimate the nett worth of the donations?

[The Turkish Government said last night it needed medicines for the
earthquake victims. Maybe this time we can be proactive and get a list of
ESSENTIAL drugs from them (plus quantities needed?), and publish it on
E-drug or the drug donations website?
Nobody has mentioned the basic emergency drug kits so far. WHO revised
their contents, and they are avaiable off the shelves of good essential
drug wholesalers (UNIPAC, IDA etc). Anybody experienced experiences with
these? WB]
