E-drug: Re: Malaria prophylaxis during pregnancy (8)
----------------------------------------------------------
Dear E-druggers,
I do agree with Dr. Gunnar Holmgren completely on this issue that the
first action to take to avoid malaria infection is to put up physical
barriers of which a mosquito net is the most important, which applies if
you are pregnant or not. This has been proved in a WHO/UNICEF
documentation.
The problem appears when it comes to personal expenses. In many countries
the cost for treatment and prophylaxis to pregnant women are free, but you
have to pay for the mosquito nets. The same normally applies for children,
who is another vulnerable group with often free medication. The reality is
that, as long as this unbalance exists, pregnant women will normally take
the cost free prophylaxis rather than investing in a mosquito net and this
unfortunately applies for children and the whole family.
