E-DRUG: regional workshops on drug pricing
------------------------------------------
Dear E-druggers,
In May 2003 EDM/WHO and Health Action International (HAI) launched a
survey method for comparing and analyzing the price people pay for
medicines, the affordability of medicines and all the components that
make up the retail price (taxes, mark-ups etc). The survey method was
published in the manual Medicine Prices: a new approach to measurement.
Details are on our websites:
http://www.who.int/medicines/library/prices.shtml
and
http://www.haiweb.org/medicineprices
The second phase of the project involves, among other things, several
regional workshops to familiarize survey managers with the survey
method, and to discuss data collection, data entry etc. The first was
held last October in Cairo. Participants said it was very worthwhile in
helping clarify the methodology. A number of surveys in the Middle East
are underway or in the planning stage.
HAI and WHO are now organizing the next medicine pricing workshops. They
are as follows:
* Asia/Pacific regional workshop: Bangkok, Chulalongkorn
University, 5-7 April (for survey managers from all Asian/Pacific
countries, except India - see below)
* National workshop: New Delhi, 14-16 April (for survey managers
from India)
* Africa regional workshop: 3-5 May, planned for Uganda
Workshops also planned for latter in the year in Latin America and
CEE/NIS. These will be notified closer to the time.
The workshops will bring together people from government, academic and
NGO backgrounds whose concerns make them ready to undertake a medicine
prices survey. There will be no charge for participation in the
workshop, but we expect participants to have sponsorship for their
travel and subsistence costs. All participants should be potential
survey managers, and must therefore also arrange funds for their survey
(average cost: US$3500).
All workshops are in two parts: pre-survey (focusing on sampling, data
collection, data entry) and post-survey (data analysis/interpretation,
policy options, international comparisons, advocacy).
Interested individuals and organizations can obtain a copy of the manual
Medicine Prices: a new approach to measurement from the websites
mentioned above, or by requesting a printed copy from the WHO/EDM
document centre (edmdoccentre@who.int). Copies are currently available
in English, French and Spanish.
If you are interested in undertaking a survey, and attending a workshop,
please contact Sonja Zweegers (sonja@haiweb.org) or Andrew Creese
(creesea@who.int), with brief details of your organization and its area
of work. Remember: the workshops are intended only for those who
actually plan to carry out a medicine pricing survey.
