[e-drug] Repeat ordering on antibiotic prescriptions

E-drug: Repeat ordering on antibiotic prescriptions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am writing up a project we have just completed and looking at the
rational use of antibiotics. Specifically the ordering of repeat
prescriptions for antibiotics used to treat URTI. In Australia doctors
may order one repeat prescription on nearly all antibiotics (i.e., they
can order two courses of antibiotics without the need for the
patient to return to the doctor). My feeling is that we are one of the
few countries that offer such arrangements. I am interested in
finding out what occurs in other health care settings. Can physi-
cians prescribe repeat prescriptions for antibiotics, or are they
required to return to the doctor for a repeat supply?
