E-DRUG: Returned medicines and drug donations (19)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Lori,
Thanks for clarification. Just few questions:
1. How do you value the donations? Is it what the company price or is it
decided in comparison with equivalent drugs, such as inexpensive generics,
in the market?
2. Do you donate to public service? How do donations fit with national
therapeutic guidelines and with procurement and supply chain system?
3.How do local prescribers and patients deal with donated drugs which are
different from what they normally prescribe?
Best wishes
Mohga

E-DRUG: Returned medicines and drug donations (20)

[With this 20th posting on drug donations I would like to close this discussion. HH, moderator]
Dear Mohga,
Our members use the US market value or Red Book value to value donations for
consistency and since in many cases there is not a local equivalent with
which to compare the value. PQMD does not handle donations, we are a
membership organization for the companies and NGOs that do. We provide a
forum for networking, education, research and the promotion of quality
donations.
The type of medicines donated is driven by local demand. The requests come
from NGOs that operate in country with the approval of and in cooperation
with the government/MOH. When a requested medicine or medical product is
not available, the NGO organizations medical directors will work with the
donor to determine if other medicines or products can meet the local need
and are appropriate considering the therapeutic guidelines, procurement and
supply chain system. One of PQMD's membership requirements is adherence to
the WHO Guidelines. PQMD's own donation guidelines also address these
issues to prevent unneeded and/or unusable drug donations.
Please let me know if I can send you additional information.
Best Wishes,
Lori
