E-drug: Revision on US and Brazilian ARV Price comparison

Yesterday we sent out a message to Ip-health and E-drug (cut and
pasted below) comparing the prices of ARVs in Brazil and the US and
the percentage of the US price that the Brazilian price is. I read the
prescribing information for Lopinavir+Ritonavir, so we calculated the
daily and then the yearly price assuming half a daily dose. In the table
below, this has been corrected.
The average price of products invented after 1996 is 23% of the US
price, and the average price of products invented before 1996 is 6%
of the US price.

Brazil and US ARV prices compared with affordability analysis
In the US, the GDP per person living with HIV is $11,574,242. In
Brazil, the GDP per person living with HIV is $741,618, or 6.4 percent
of the US income per person living with HIV. One measure of an
affordable price for ARV products in Brazil is the ratio of US to Brazil
GDP/HIV+. If prices are 6.4 percent of the US price, they are
probably affordable if purchased by the State. Prices for ARV
products in Brazil depend upon when the products were invented. All
ARV products invented before 1996 are generics in Brazil. Products
invented after 1996 are on patent. All post 1996 products are much
more expensive. The following is a comparison of US and Brazil
prices for seven important ARV products. The average price of
products invented before 1996 is 6 percent of the US price. The
average price of the products invented after 1996 is 29 percent of the
US price. If Brazil cannot get the new drugs priced much lower, it will
be difficult for Brazil to sustain universal access to HAART treatment.
