E-DRUG: RFI: anti-counterfeit measures? (2)
-------------------------------------------
In Response to Dr. Malone.
We are working on drug quality issues in many countries in Asia, Africa and
Latin America. Our program, USP DQI (United States Pharmacopeia Drug Quality
and Information) is a funded by USAID and is working in collaboration with
WHO/PAHO in all aspects of drug quality. We focus on TB, HIV AIDS and
Malaria. In all countries we deal with drug quality control at the central
level, in the provincial level and we work also with manufacturers, DRA,
Procurement and MOH. Testing drugs is the only one way to assure their
quality, we use three levels of drug testing. Visit our web
site:(www.uspdqi.org) and (www.usp.org)
Counterfeit drugs manufacturers are becoming very sophisticated, holographic
stickers or labels are part of drug quality control but are not sufficient.
As far as I know USP DQI, WHO and MSH are the only ones working on drug
quality in developing countries.
There is a conference in Spain by WHO on counterfeit drugs on February 2004,
go to EDM in WHO web site, you will find the details about the conference.
