E-DRUG: Safety of norfenefrine in pregnancy

E-DRUG: Safety of norfenefrine in pregnancy (cont)
--------------------------------------------------

Dear Annoesjka,

First, I do agree with Wilbert that it might not be a good idea to use it
in pregnancy.

Then let me quote from the German "Rote Liste" of which my copy was from
1985: In pregnant women, the parenteral formulation may reinforce pains of
childbirth. As with all alpha-adrenergic drugs, Novadral (parenteral) is
not recommended for aiding in delivery as a reduction in placenta-blood
perfusion cannot be ruled out (sorry for the clumsy English).

As for the different tradition in the treatment of hypotension, I quote
from Martindale:
One contentious issue is whether general and non-specific symptoms of
ill-health such as mental and physical fatigue, depression and anxiety can
be attributed to a low blood pressure. In the UK and the USA such an
association has never been accepted whereas in some European countries
(e.g. Germany) a wide range of pharmaceutical preparations has been
available for treatment. Some evidence is being presented to support the
theory, as well as to suggest a possible link between the chronic fatigue
syndrome and neurally mediated hypotension, although implications for
treatment are far from clear.

If this is the indication, if I were pregnant, I would not be happy to take
it!

Regards Kirsten
