E-DRUG: Save the Drug Therapeutics Bulletin (9)

Dear E-druggers,
I¹d like to correct what Foppe said about la revue Prescrire:
In France there are only 50,000 practicing GPs, and 25-33% of them subscribe
to la revue Prescrire.
French health authorities did not stop funding our publications, but
Prescrire decided to stop accepting such funding, which is quite another
story. In the French context we realized at the time that being totally
Independent¹ on subscribers was the only way to generate comparative
information on therapeutics with the maximum of freedom.
Another point stressed by Leo: distributing a drug bulletin free is no
guarantee it is actually read and used by all. Subscription bulletins have
limited scope, but at least you can assume your bulletin is used.
Subscription renewal rates are a good index of reader satisfaction and
bulletin sustainability. Last year the subscription renewal rate was a
record 86%.
Prescrire has also a monthly readers¹ test. Regular subscribers have to pay
further to their subscription to participate in this self-test! Around 2,400
readers do that.
