E-drug: Short course in pharmaco-economics

PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT
SHORT COURSE IN PHARMACO-ECONOMICS.
The first short course in pharmaco-economics will be run by the
WHO Collaborating Centre for Teaching and Training in Rational
Pharmacotherapy at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences,
University of Newcastle, Australia, from November 7-20 1998.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course is aimed to provide health professionals working in
developing countries with:
- skills in the conduct of economic evaluation of
pharmaceuticals
- ability to use the results of economic analyses when
making purchasing decisions in relation to
pharmaceuticals
COURSE CONTENT
The course will cover the following topics:
critical appraisal of clinical data
use of meta-analysis
assessment of comparative effectiveness and safety of
pharmaceuticals
principles of health economics
principles of health program evaluation
use of economic modelling and decision analysis
critical appraisal of economic analyses
application of the results of economic analysis
TEACHING METHODS
The course will be partly problem-based. Participants will work
in small groups with a tutor, supplemented by general tutorials
and seminars. Participants will be encouraged to bring with
them examples of problems in relation to managing drug supply
from their own setting.
LECTURERS
The Faculty for the course will include staff from the Discipline
of Clinical Pharmacology (Prof David Henry, Prof Tony Smith,
Dr Suzanne Hill), visiting staff from WHO Geneva, and guest
lecturers with extensive experience in pharmaco-economics. All
have had experience in either the Australian system of
economic evaluation of pharmaceuticals or managing drug
supply in developing countries.
COURSE DATES AND VENUE.
November 7-20 inclusive.
The course will be held at the David Maddison Building, Royal
Newcastle Hospital, Pacific Street, Newcastle, NSW Australia.
This is in central Newcastle, 5 minutes walk from shops,
accommodation and the beach.
ACCOMMODATION.
Participants will be accommodated in self-catered shared
apartments with individual bedrooms, kitchen and living areas.
Bed-linen, crockery and cutlery and cooking utensils are
provided.
FEES AND COSTS
Fees of $3500 US per participant will cover tuition fees, course
materials and accommodation. In addition, each participant
needs an allowance to cover daily food and miscellaneous
expenses (a minimum of $200 US per week is suggested) for
the period of the course. Travel costs are extra.
APPLICATIONS
Applications are invited from health care professionals working
in government or academic settings, involved in the
management of pharmaceuticals or purchasing
pharmaceuticals, at national, institutional or program level.
Knowledge or basic training in epidemiology, and/or
biostatistics, would be an advantage, but is not essential.
The course will be provided in English.
Applicants must find their own sponsors.
The number of participants will be restricted to 25.
