ANNOUNCEMENT
SHORT COURSE IN PHARMACOECONOMICS
A short course in pharmacoeconomics will be run by the WHO Collaborating
Centre for Training in Pharmacology and Rational Drug Use, at the Faculty
of Medicine and Health Sciences, The University of Newcastle, Australia,
from November 7th to 20th, 1998
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The courses aim to provide health professionals working in developing
countries with:
An understanding of the principles of economic analysis
Skills in the conduct of economic evaluation of pharmaceuticals
Appropriate approaches to pharmacoeconomic analysis in developing
countries
Ability to use the results of economic analysis when making purchasing
decisions in relation to pharmaceuticals
Ability to use the results of economic analysis when setting prices for
pharmaceutical products
COURSE CONTENT
The course will cover the following topics:
Analysis of clinical trials
Critical appraisal of clinical trials
Use of meta-analysis
Assessment of the comparative effectiveness and safety of pharmaceuticals
Performing an economic analysis based on the results of clinical trials
How to calculate costs
Critical appraisal of economic analysis
Application of the results of economic analysis
TEACHING METHODS
The course will be largely problem-based. Participants will work in small
groups with a tutor supplemented by general tutorials and seminars.
Participants will be encouraged to bring with them examples of problems
relating to the purchase and pricing of drugs in their own country.
FACULTY
The faculty for the course will include staff from Australian universities,
and the WHO, all of whom have extensive experience in pharmacoeconomic
analysis.
COURSE, DATE, AND VENUE
November 7th to 20th inclusive. The course will be held at the David
Maddison Building, Royal Newcastle Hospital, Pacific Street, Newcastle, New
South Wales, Australia. This is in central Newcastle, 5 minutes' walk from
shops, accommodation and the beach.
ACCOMMODATION
Participants will be accommodated in selfcatered share departments with
individual bedrooms, kitchen and living area. Bed linen, crockery and
cutlery, and cooking utensils are provided.
FEES AND COSTS
A fee of $3,500US per participant will cover tuition fees, course materials
and accommodation.
In addition, each participant needs an allowance to cover daily food and
miscellaneous expenses (approximately $150US per week at the moment) for
the period of the course. Travel costs between the home country and
Newcastle Australia are not covered.
Applications are welcome from health care professionals working in
government or academic settings, or in the pharmaceutical industry in
developing countries.
The course will be provided in English.
Applicants must find their own sponsors.
The number of participants will be restricted.
