[e-drug] Survey: Is cotrimoxazol available in your country?

E-DRUG: Survey: Is cotrimoxazol available in your country?
----------------------------------------------------------
[Seems an easy question, but is cotrim really used in HIV+ children? Please post your messages in a separate message to tina@aidscarewatch.org
Thanks to Bev for crossposting. WB]

Dear Forum Members,

The AIDS-Care-Watch Campaign needs your help and opinions to help shape
our preparations for the forthcoming International AIDS Conference
(IAC) in Toronto next month.

The simple questions below will take you less than ten minutes to
answer, and your responses will help steer the way the campaign prepares
AIDS care-related advocacy messages for use at the conference.

In Toronto, the campaign intends to highlight the widespread lack of
access to Cotrimoxazole Treatment as a key issue to be addressed.

Evidence demonstrates the positive impact of a WHO-recommended
treatment with a low-cost, anti-bacterial drug cotrimoxazole in extending
the lives of children and adults living with HIV and/or tuberculosis
(TB). Trials in African countries, for example, have shown that people
with TB who take cotrimoxazole live longer than those who do not receive
the drug.

Please email your responses to the following questions to:
tina@aidscarewatch.org

1. Have you heard of cotrimoxazole (also known as Bactrim, Septra or
sulphamethoxazole - trimethoprim)? Yes__/ No__

2. Is it widely available to people living with HIV in your country?
Yes__/ No__

3. Is it widely available to people living with active TB in your
country? Yes__/No__

4. How much does it cost in your local currency? Per tablet _____Per

cotrimoxazole prophylaxis for adults? Yes__/No__

8. Are you aware of the UNAIDS/World Health Organization guidelines on

Now please take a moment to answer the following questions in your own
words:

9. Is cotrimoxazole important in extending the lives of children and
adults living with HIV, including those unable to access antiretroviral
(ARV) treatment?

10. What are the main challenges to increasing availability of
cotrimoxazole (e.g. funding, policy, etc.) in your country? Give specific
examples if you can.

11. In your experience, are people living with HIV or TB aware of the
potential benefits of cotrimoxazole? If so, do they understand how and
when to use it? Give specific examples if you can.
