E-DRUG: Third generation oral contraceptives (2)
------------------------------------------------
I can't answer your question directly but the situation may be changing
anyway. FIGO (the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics),
which recently met in Copenhagen, released the following statement: "The
risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) among users of OCs with
third-generation progestins, as compared with users of second-generation
progestins, may be less than initially reported."
Apparently the risk initially reported in 1995 may be due to
confounding factors, such as duration of use of the pill or prescribing
practices. New research also suggests that the two third-generation
progestin pills may even offer a reduced risk of myocardial infarction.
I don't have the citations on this at hand but can get them. The authors
of the statement were S Skouby and Ojvind Lidegaard, U of Copenhagen,
Daniel Mishell, U of S Calif at LA, John Guillebaud, Margaret Pyke
Center, London. All four are ob/gyns, very highly regarded in the field.
