E-drug: Treatment of Malaria (cont)
---------------------------------------------
There is work from the Bangkok children's hospital showing that mefloquine
can be followed by quinine.
Further recent work by French researchers working in Africa has shown that
mefloquine does not cause the sort of QT prolongation that halofantrine
does. This corroborates the work from Bangkok, removing the theoretical
contra-indication to following mefloquine with quinine.
Following mefloquine with chloroquine would not make sense, as a parasite
resistant to mefloquine would most likely not be susceptible to chloroquine.
The prophylaxis may not have failed because of parasite resistance, but it
is probably safer clinically to assume so.
