I think Billy hit the nail on the head at the end of his last message.
If we name something counselling, it is not merely giving
information, although that may be a part of the concept.
You can only counsel if there is a mutual trust, and if the
pharmacist shows some empathy towards the patient.
The aim of counseling is not merely to improve compliance, but to
improve the patients drug related quality of life.
Counselling is an essential part of the pharmaceutical care concept.
However, it might very well be that pharmacists do counsel
because they want to deliver more than mail-order (and in fact more
than the other health care professionals can do in the field of
medicines). And I think it fair to acknowledge that fact and there is
nothing wrong with that.
Pharmacy has been concentrating on the drugs and the logistics
for too long. Pharmacist can serve their public and society better
by concentrating on the patient instead.
