E-drug: UNAIDS: Compulsory Licensing may not be necessary
---------------------------------------------

Anyone who advises governments or public health workers that
compulsory licensing will be unimportant or unnecessary is giving bad
advice. I think everyone should understand that the world we live in
now will change. bThe legacy of weak patent laws in developing
countries will change with the implementation of the TRIPS and other
trade agreements and negotiations. The existing group of drugs off
patent will be followed by new therapies protected by patents. And
countries will be affected not only by their own patent laws, but also
by the patent laws in countries that have a sophisticated domestic
industry that can actually produce drugs. Below is a note I wrote for
pharm-policy earlier.
