UWC 2022 Online Modules in Pharmaceutical Public Health

Accredited Online/Distance Learning Modules (1-semester) in Pharmaceutical
Policy & Management, and Rational Medicines Use will be offered at
the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa.

They may be taken as Continuing Education Modules or as part of the Pharmaceutical Public Health area of specialisation within our Master in Public Health (MPH) programme.

Target Groups:
Pharmaceutical Policy and Management - Current and future policy makers
and advisors, managers responsible for policy implementation, consultants
and academics with an interest in policy implementation and management in
LMICs.

Rational Medicines Use - Health professionals, including pharmacists,
doctors and nurses from the public (government), NGO and private sectors
working at national, provincial, district and facility levels, involved in
managing and improving the use of medicines.

- Pharmaceutical Policy and Management Online Module (July -
November 2022)
This module combines a theoretical underpinning with sessions devoted to
common medicines policy issues and management approaches, and covers topics
such as national medicines policies, quality of medicines, pharmaceutical
supply, human resources in pharmaceutical systems, policies to fight
corruption, and COVID-19-related challenges.

- Rational Medicines Use Online Module (July - November 2022)
This module teaches students how to characterise and investigate reasons
for problem medicine use behaviours and review different interventions to
address these problem behaviours. The module incorporates appropriate use
of antimicrobials as well as the new challenges associated with treating
non-communicable diseases and COVID-19 related issues.

The modules run over one semester (approx. 15 weeks) and comprise online
materials with weekly activities, webinars, discussion forums and two
written assignments. Each module fulfils 15 credits (150 learning hours) at
Masters-level. Participants typically come from South Africa, other
sub-Saharan African countries and beyond.

The online modules are convened by Dr Hazel Bradley (PPM) and Prof Renier
Coetzee (RMU) of the School of Public Health, UWC and are offered in
collaboration with the School of Pharmacy, UWC, Institute of Tropical
Medicine, Belgium, independent consultants and colleagues from South
African provincial and national Departments of Health.

Cost per Online Module: R5,000 South Africans; US$350 Internationals with
African citizenship; US$950 Internationals without African citizenship.
