Promoting Rational Medicines Use in the Community Course (29 June - 10
July 2009)
This course will be facilitated by the School of Public Health, School
of Pharmacy and Dept of Anthropology & Sociology, University of the
Western Cape, and the University of Amsterdam. It will be held at the
School of Public Health, UWC and will form part of the School of Public
Health Winter School.
The course is aimed at a range of stakeholders interested in improving
medicines use in the community, including pharmacists. It will focus on
methods to study and remedy inappropriate medicines use in the
community; practical approaches to investigating & prioritising
medicines use problems; and how to develop effective strategies for
change. It will address the use of medicines used in the treatment of
HIV/AIDS, TB and chronic diseases.
The 2-week course is participatory and includes group activities,
fieldwork, presentations and discussions. Participants spend the final
two days preparing a detailed plan of action to confront an important
medicine use problem in their area of work.
