E-DRUG: WHO, WIPO, WTO symposium on AMR - 25 October 2016
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most pressing challenges for humanity. Resistance is emerging and spreading globally, threatening our ability to treat common infectious diseases, resulting in prolonged illness, disability and death.

As a way of addressing this challenge, the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the World Trade Organization(WTO) will hold a symposium on "How to Foster Innovation, Access and Appropriate Use of Antibiotics?" on 25 October in WIPO HQ in Geneva.

This symposium will offer a forum to exchange views and experiences, to achieve a better understanding of the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance and to envisage possible ways forward in addressing the antimicrobial resistance threat.

Further details about the symposium can be accessed at http://www.who.int/phi/implementation/trilateral_cooperation/en/.

The agenda of the symposium is available at http://www.wipo.int/meetings/en/2016/wipo_wto_who_technical_symposium.html.

Antimicrobial resistance is a complex problem with single, isolated interventions having limited impact. Coordinated action is required to minimize the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance with countries needing a national plan on antimicrobial resistance. Greater innovation and investment is required in research and development of new antimicrobial medicines, vaccines, and diagnostic tools. The symposium will contribute to advancing the response against antimicrobial resistance through discussions of more effective antimicrobial resistance mitigation responses.
