WORLD AIDS DAY: LAMY PLEDGES ACTION ON MEDICINES

European Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy marked World AIDS day (1 Dec)
by confirming his commitment to action to make safe, affordable
medication available to all who need it. 'We are committed to doing
whatever is necessary to shape the right conditions so that the
poorest of the poor have access to the medicines they deserve.
Increasing access to affordable key pharmaceuticals is a MUST in the
fight against the three main communicable diseases, that is, malaria,
tuberculosis, and of course HIV/AIDS which is in the spotlight today,'
he said.

Mr Lamy was joined by Commissioners Poul Nielson (Development and
Humanitarian Aid) and Philippe Busquin (Research) in expressing
support for efforts to combat HIV/AIDS with all means at their
disposal. They said their pledge to give the issue top priority at
the Round Table on Communicable Diseases held in Brussels on 28
September with the World Health Organisation and UNAIDS could be
given a boost at the upcoming G8 conference in Okinawa, and at the
EU-US summit on 18 December.
