Le Bureau R�gional Afrique de l'OMS organise un Forum Africain sur le R�le
de la M�decine Traditionnelle dans le syst�me de sant� au premier trimestre
2000, les d�tails sont fournis ci-dessous.
Nous vous invitons � le commenter et � nous faire parvenir toute
information et exp�rience en relation avec la M�decine Traditionnelle

OBJECTIFS DU FORUM

Objectif g�n�ral

Promouvoir le r�le de la m�decine traditionnelle dans les soins de sant�
primaires et assister le minist�re � trouver des voies appropri�es pour
int�grer ces pratiques dans leur syst�me de soin

Objectifs sp�cifiques

1. To review and share country experiences on national policy of
traditional medicine, on practices and use of traditional medicines in the
prevention and treatment of diseases in primary health care;

2. To identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats related to
the promotion of traditional medicine as part of health care delivery
systems;

3. To identify typical interventions at country and regional levels aimed
at rational use of traditional medicine and its integration into health
care delivery systems;

4. To identify priority research areas particularly related to HIV/AIDS
and common diseases prevented and treated by traditional medicines;

5. To identify training needs in traditional medicine in the countries of
the African Region

6. To foster and identify areas of collaboration between WHO, countries
and other key partners in the field of traditional medicine.

THEME

The main theme of the African Forum is "The Role of Traditional Medicine in
Health Systems" with the following sub-themes:
Traditional medicine and health care system
The potential role of traditional medicine in the prevention and treatment
of diseases
Research on traditional medicine
Education and Training needs
Partnerships and priority areas for action

MAIN SESSION OF THE FORUM

The papers will be presented within the main sessions indicated below:

SWOT analysis related to the promotion of traditional medicine Integrating
traditional medicine into health systems
Traditional medicine in the treatment and prevention of non-communicable
and endemic diseases
Future challenges of traditional medicine from the perspectives of
regulators,
manufacturers, traditional and allopathic health practitioners
Morbidity and mortality of malaria and HIV/AIDS
Information resources on traditional medicine
Research, Education and Training needs

The following questions will be raised and addressed:

Questions such as how can policy makers be persuaded to include traditional
medicine in their health priority agenda?
How can government recognition of traditional medicine be obtained and
appropriate regulations for its control are established?
What is the role of District and National Health Systems Development in
promoting the integration of traditional medicine into health systems in
the context of health sector reforms? How can mechanisms for promotion of
collaboration between conventional and traditional health care
practitioners be identified?
What type of traditional medicine research should be carried out which can
influence decision-making?
What is the role of actors, i.e. governments, WHO and partners in promoting
the role of traditional medicine in PHC?
What has traditional medicine to offer in the new millenium?
