8th International Congress of WFPHA

Dear Colleagues:
It is my pleasure to announce the Eighth International Congress of the
World Federation of the Public Health Association (WFPHA) coming up on Oc-
tober 12-17, 1997.
We are proud that the first Congress to be held on the African continent
will take place in Arusha, Tanzania.
The theme of the Congress is "Health in Transition: Opportunities and Chal-
lenges". Participants who will include health ministers, heads of UN agen-
cies, policy/decision makers, public health practitioners, researchers and
academia, will chart out measures essential for improving public health
during 21st century.
The programme will include presentations by a wide range of professionals
in the field of public health, selected from over 200 submitted abstracts.
Among the sub-themes to be addressed in plenary sessions by world public
health leaders, are:
- Health policies and the strategy of Health-for-All through primary
health care
- Epidemiological changes, including new and re-emerging diseases
- Population issues and demographic trends
- Environmental and occupational health
- Social, economic, and political determinants of health
- Health services, including health sector reform, financing, and the role
of alternative medicine and traditional healers
- Role of the community, NGOs, and grassroots organisations
- Technical co-operation in health
- Gender, race, and ethnic perspective
- Linkage between health and human rights
- Promotion of family health, nutrition, and welfare
- Capacity building, including health education, training, leadership
development, and establishment of public health associations
- Violence, wars, natural disasters, injuries, and accidents
- Health research agenda
- Communication and networking
The Congress will in addition host poster presentations, commercial exhib-
its, skills-building workshops, organisational meetings, social events and
field visits. Post and pre-Congress activities will include visiting some
of the best national parks in the world, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro (the
highest in Africa), and many more.
Although the deadline for submitting abstracts has passed, we encourage
anyone interested in attending this exciting event to contact us regarding
