9th WFPHA International Congress

The World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) is a non-
governmental organisation composed of national public health associa-
tions from 60 nations and regions. It has official relations with the
World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund
(UNICEF), and ties with many other international organizations. Every
three years, the WFPHA organises and produces an international congress
at which major public health issues are discussed. Participants include
academicians, economists, researchers, health care practitioners, and
specialists in community development, health education, and information
technology. Previous congresses have been held in Indonesia, the United
States, and most recently in Arusha, Tanzania - the first held in Af-
rica. We are currently planning for the Ninth WFPHA International Con-
gress to be held in Beijing, PRC from 2-6 September, 2000.
This Congress will be co-hosted by the China Preventive Medical Asso-
ciation (CPMA) and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM).
The theme of the Congress is "Challenges for Public Health at the Dawn
of the 21st Century", and many issues revolve around the environment,
health and development, poverty/economics, and global communications.
Some of the megatrend issues to be discussed include: Demographic-
Economic Transitions and Health; Global Communication: Information,
Education, and Participation; Health and Infrastructure; Health and De-
velopment; Health and the Environment; Tobacco Use; HIV/AIDS; Re-
emerging Diseases; and Reproductive Health issues.
