Africa Losing Nurses to Britain (16)
------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues

I want to thank the various contributors to this thread.

As I look at the messages I am struck by the bridge that is
emerging between the NORTH and the SOUTH as a result of people
flows. There is enormous value in the community of African
nurses!

The potential value of nurses from Africa and in Africa is enor-
mous... the best way to realise the value in Africa is to have
enough money around so that they get paid reasonably... and also
they have work resources so that they can do their job reasona-
bly. That is a private and a public finance problem of enormous
importance.

But maybe there are some small steps. Maybe we could start to
use the Afrifund Database to help put "on the record" the health
facilities (private/public/FBO/NGO/CBO/etc.) that are operat-
ing... what they are doing... what funds/resources they have...
what they should do but cannot, etc... so that one day maybe we
can help to get more funds and gifts in kind donated.

The question is often asked in the NORTH... How do we help?...
and the answer should be "Look at this list of organizations
that have needs". And then there should be further information
about the best ways to get funds and materials from NORTH to the
SOUTH destination... and info about guidelines so that local law
and regulations are respected,.. including issues like out-of-
date drugs!

The Afrifund Database aims to have action oriented "management
information" that helps to make development (including health)
intiatives work well and do well... including helping to get
more funds used for good things that deliver results. The data-
base should also help to add a comfort level about the legiti-
macy of the entities that are "on the record".

The Afrifund Database is only now in its first phase of planned
functionality. We welcome feedback so that it can be more and
more useful in the future.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Peter Burgess
