African Dissertation Workshop - May, 1999
-----------------------------------------
Open for African Graduate Students World-wide
The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, with support from the
Rockefeller Foundation, will be conducting an African Dissertation
Development Workshop on the theme of Health and Population Issues in
Africa in May, 1999. This workshop will be conducted in a distance
education format over the Internet. This Workshop is designed for Af-
rican doctoral students in the social sciences, health sciences, or
demography, who have completed at least one year of graduate study
and are in the process of developing a dissertation research pro-
posal. Participants will gain skills in designing a doctoral disser-
tation research proposal while at the same time having the opportu-
nity to interact with distinguished faculty and a variety of African
doctoral students concerned with health and development topics in Af-
rica.
This Workshop is being conducted jointly by faculty from the depart-
ments of Population and Family Health Sciences, and International
Health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health for the fourth
successive year. The distance education format of the workshop is de-
signed so that African graduate students anywhere in the world with
access to the Internet and WWW will be able to actively participate.
Applicants should reply by e-mail to:
<rtkambic@jhsph.edu>
with a letter explaining their reasons for wanting to participate in
the Workshop. Also required (by e-mail, or fax or regular mail -see
below) is a brief 1-2 page description of the proposed research, a
brief resume, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor.
Because of funding from the Rockefeller Foundation there is no charge
for participation. Enrolment will be limited to 30 students. Please
note the distance education approach of this workshop and the basic
computer and internet connectivity requirements as described below.
This is a "virtual" Workshop, which will be conducted entirely over
the WWW. All lecture-presentations will be available anytime/anywhere
on the Internet, accessible through your WWW browser. Lectures will
use RealAudio streaming audio with synchronised slides. Faculty-
student and student-student interactions will be primarily asynchro-
nous through threaded discussions on an electronic Bulletin Board.
Synchronous interaction will be through LiveTalk internet chat ses-
sions for participants world-wide. The computer requirements are Win-
dows or Macintosh with a WWW Browser (Netscape 3.x or Microsoft Ex-
plorer) and Internet connectivity with at least a 14.4 kb modem or
LAN. (Note, all software requirements are free downloads including:
web browsers, and RealPlayer. Tutorials for accessing and using the
software are provided.) Information about the Workshop may be found
