Free "Virtual" Dissertation Workshop
------------------------------------

The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, with support from the Rocke-
feller Foundation, will be conducting an African Dissertation Develop-
ment Workshop on the theme of Health and Population Issues in Africa in
May, 1998. The intended audience for this workshop are African doctoral
students in the social sciences, especially health sciences or demogra-
phy, who have completed at least one year of graduate study and are in
the process of developing a dissertation research proposal. Partici-
pants will gain skill in designing a doctoral dissertation research
proposal while at the same time having the opportunity to interact with
distinguished faculty and a variety of African doctoral students con-
cerned with health and development topics in Africa.

An announcement of this Workshop is on the WWW at:

http://globetrotter.berkeley.edu/RADW/JHMay98.html

This Workshop is being conducted jointly by faculty from the depart-
ments of Population Dynamics and International Health at the Johns Hop-
kins School of Public Health for the third successive year. We plan to
have African participants from around the world for the first time. Ap-
plicants should reply by e-mail to:

mailto:hmosley@jhsph.edu

with a letter explaining their reasons for wanting to participate in
the workshop. Also required (by e-mail, or fax or regular mail - see
below) is a brief 1-2 page description of the proposed research, a
brief resume, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor.
Because of funding from the Rockefeller Foundation there is no charge
for participation. Enrolment will be limited to 30 students. Please
note the distance education approach of this workshop and the basic
computer and internet connectivity requirements as described below. We
have had extensive experience in distance education and know that this
mode of instructions can be very effective.

This is a "virtual" Workshop, which will be conducted entirely over the
WWW. All lecture-presentations will be available anytime/anywhere on
the internet accessible through your WWW browser. Lectures will have
RealAudio streaming audio with synchronised Powerpoint slides. Faculty-
student and student-student interactions will be primarily asynchronous
through threaded discussions on an electronic bulletin board. Synchro-
nous interaction will be through telephone conference calls (for par-
ticipants in the US and Canada only), and by use of NetMeeting chat
sessions for participants world-wide. The computer requirements are
Windows or Macintosh with a WWW Browser (Netscape 3.x or Microsoft Ex-
plorer) and internet connectivity with at least a 14.4kb modem or LAN.
(Note, all software requirements are free downloads including: web
browsers, Powerpoint viewer, RealAudio, NetMeeting etc. Instructions
for accessing and using software will be provided.)
