Workshop on Proposal Development for Scientific Research Funding
in Sub-Saharan Africa
----------------------------------------------------------------

Venue: Nairobi, Kenya
Dates: 16-20 August 2004

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) based
in Nairobi, Kenya, in collaboration with the University of
Southampton are inviting nominations of senior social science or
public health researchers to attend a workshop on research pro-
posal development. The main objective of the workshop is to
strengthen the capacity of African scholars and institutions in
developing good fundable proposals for scientific research. The
specific objectives of the workshop are:

a. to train African scholars in proposal development for social
science research in the field of health or population;

b. to inform scholars of the existing research programmes of the
major funding organizations and to describe the proposal review
processes of these organizations;

c. to create opportunity for discussion between researchers from
the region, representatives of donor agencies, and facilitators;

d. to enable scholars to develop their concept proposals during
the workshop and to obtain feedback from donor representatives
and facilitators.

Eligibility
The competition for places to attend the workshop is open to
senior African scholars with at least five years experience of
conducting research. Only scholars who have participated in a
scientific social science research project (either as a princi-
pal investigator or a named co-investigator) in the field of
health or population will be considered. Nomination Procedures
Heads of research in major universities and research institu-
tions are invited to nominate candidates who satisfy the eligi-
bility criteria to participate in this workshop. Participants
will be selected from those nominated through a rigorous selec-
tion process. Places are limited; therefore, not more than one
candidate will be selected from an institution to attend. Heads
of research should send their nominated candidate's CV plus a
brief statement from the nominee highlighting her/his areas of
research interest and a list of recent or current research ac-
tivities. Selected candidates will be required to produce a
short concept paper (2-5 pages) which they will develop during
the workshop. It is important that all nominated candidates in-
clude their contact details including email addresses.
