AIDS and Traditional Healers
----------------------------
I have been following the discussion on HIV/AIDS and traditional
healers with great interest.
We have to realise that whenever an African patient is sent away from
the hospital for home based care he/she usually ends up at the tradi-
tional healer. Either because the relatives do not believe the scien-
tific diagnosis or for a second opinion and hoping that the client
might get better.
I would suggest those interested in the subject to read an article
entitled "STD/HIV/AIDS knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and practices of
traditional healers in Botswana", AIDS CARE (1997) Vol. 9, No 4, pp.
417-425.
I would be eager to correspond with other researchers looking at tra-
ditional healing particularly in Africa.
