Announcement: Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS Roundtable
-----------------------------------------------

Dear friends and colleagues,

Please find below an invitation to the Roundtable Session -
"Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS in Development: Time to Scale Up" - at
the upcoming International AIDS Conference in Bangkok on July 15
10:30-14:00 (Room N). The Roundtable will be co-hosted by UNAIDS
and the GTZ under the Leadership Programme.

The purpose of the Roundtable is to make concrete progress to-
wards strengthening support to Mainstreaming processes in part-
ner countries by identifying key lessons learnt from current ex-
periences and formulating practical recommendations for the way
forward.

One of the immediate expected outcomes is the production of a
"Consensus Paper for Joint Action" based on the proceedings of
the session. This could form a good basis to promote shared un-
derstanding and coordinated efforts in support of Mainstreaming
HIV/AIDS.

We are looking forward to welcoming you at this important event
and invite you to share this announcement widely with partners
and networks who would be interested in attending.

With best regards on behalf of the UNAIDS-GTZ organising commit-
tee,

MAINSTREAMING AIDS IN DEVELOPMENT: TIME TO SCALE UP

Background
Since 2003, GTZ and the UNAIDS Secretariat have concluded a
Partnership Agreement under the GTZ BACKUP Initiative, which
aims at scaling up support to Country Responses.

"Mainstreaming AIDS" being a priority for both partners, they
decided to co-organise a session on the theme under the "Leader-
ship Programme" at the International AIDS Conference in Bangkok,
with the purpose to commit Leadership from North and South to
support the mainstreaming of HIV/AIDS in national development
processes.

Mainstreaming AIDS into Development

"Mainstreaming AIDS into Development" aims at expanding the
Global and Country Responses beyond the development of "verti-
cal" of "specific" HIV/AIDS programmes. It ultimately aims at
equipping affected countries with the capacity to contain the
epidemic by bringing key development instruments, sectors, and
actors to address both:
* The 'root causes' of the epidemic in the specific country con-
text, e.g. gender inequality, poverty, vulnerability linked to
economic migration, lack of access to education;
* The impact of the epidemic at the different levels of society,
e.g. on education, agriculture, private business, governance ca-
pacity.
