UNAIDS/WB/UNDP sessions on Mainstreaming AIDS and Multi-sectoral
Responses at the 7th ICAAP in Kobe
----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear colleagues,

Please find below on invitation to two UNAIDS/WB/UNDP sponsored
SESSIONS on MAINSTREAMING AIDS and MULTI-SECTORAL RESPONSES at
the INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON AIDS IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC
(ICAAP) in Kobe on July 2 and 4, 2005.

BACKGROUND:

Under the UNGASS Declaration of Commitment, 181 countries have
agreed to mainstream HIV and AIDS in development frameworks at
national, sectoral and local levels. For relevant sectors and
actors to make their specific contributions to the national AIDS
response, they need to engage in an iterative process of main-
streaming HIV and AIDS. Through this, national strategies and
sectoral and local actions mutually inform and reinforce each
other.

The UNAIDS Secretariat, UNDP, and the WORLD BANK have been sup-
porting AIDS mainstreaming as a critical approach to effectively
scaling up the responses to the epidemic in all regions. In line
with this, they are co-hosting two satellite events at the
ICAAP, aimed at:

* Establishing the rationale for multi-sectoral responses to HIV
and AIDS in Asia, and highlighting the importance of main-
streaming as a key strategy for achieving this; and

* Within the Asian context, establishing mainstreaming AIDS as
an essential implementation modality, both at sectoral and sub-
national levels - where "vertical" strategies are translated
into coordinated, "horizontal" actions.
