Children and youth affected by HIV/AIDS

First call to consultants, researchers and agencies

Save the Children (UK) in South Africa has received a grant to com-
mission work over the next 18 months to inform planning and pro-
grammes that aim to address the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on
children and youth in South Africa.

Consultants, researchers and agencies with appropriate experience are
invited to indicate their interest in undertaking work in the follow-
ing areas: Save the Children (UK) is committed to the development of
emerging researchers.

1. Awareness versus behaviour change
   Objective:
   To understand the determinants of successful sexual behaviour change
   and to identify interventions that are effective in the reduction of
   HIV transmission among youth and children.

2. HIV infection and childhood sexual abuse
   Objective:
   To gain an understanding of the relationship between sexual abuse and
   HIV infection amongst children and to identify what is the contribu-
   tion of childhood sexual abuse to the overall picture of HIV infec-
   tion in children.

3. HIV/AIDS, affected children and the private sector
   Objective:
   To advocate for the inclusion of the rights and needs of children in
   the development of the HIV strategies and practices of the private
   sector.

4. Database of organisations working with and for children and youth.
   Objective:
   To develop a database that can be used to facilitate work with and
   for children and youth affected by HIV/AIDS.

- a summary CV with contact details;
- a one-page motivation that clearly states which area/s you are in-
  terested in and why your experience is relevant.

The closing date for expressions of interest is Friday 29 September
2000. Detailed terms of reference will be forwarded to applicants to
guide the development of proposals.
