E-mail coverage of Asia Pacific regional HIV/AIDS conference

SEA-AIDS BRINGS THE 5TH ICAAP TO YOUR SCREEN

Following on from the recent coverage of the African AIDS conference
in Lusaka, the focus of attention is about to switch to the Asia Pa-
cific region.

The 5th International Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific be-
gins in just over a week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, under the banner:

'The Next Millennium: Taking Stock and Moving Forward'

The SEA-AIDS e-mail discussion forum and its team of Key Correspon-
dents from Cambodia, China, India, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand
will bring you on-the-ground daily coverage of sessions and inter-
views with participants.

People who are not able to attend the conference in person are en-
couraged to watch proceedings through SEA-AIDS and to give input and
comments from organisations working on HIV and AIDS in the region.

The Chairperson of the 5th ICAAP, Marina Mahatir, recently encouraged
AIDS workers to use the e-forum to "talk about their own projects" in
the hope of gaining support for them.

"Instead of allowing others to talk on our behalf, we must speak for
ourselves in putting forward our own opinions towards finding our own
solutions for the problems that are facing us."

***** IF YOU ARE ALREADY A MEMBER OF SEA-AIDS ***** Do nothing - you
should expect around 10 short postings a day from the conference

***** IF YOU NOT ARE ALREADY A MEMBER OF SEA-AIDS *****

To join SEA-AIDS send an e-mail to:

***** WHAT IS SEA-AIDS? *****

SEA-AIDS is an independent HIV/AIDS e-mail discussion forum for Asia
and the Pacific. It started in early 1996 and today comprises around
2000 people and organisations working in and with Asian countries in
the response to the epidemic. Each day members discuss current
HIV/AIDS issues and share their experiences about what works and what
does not in response to the epidemic, as well as news from the region
and forthcoming events such as conferences and workshops. The forum
is also linked to a similar initiative among over 1600 people working
on HIV in Africa, so that the two regions can benefit from each oth-
ers experience and knowledge. The objectives of SEA-AIDS are to de-
crease the isolation faced by many people working on HIV & AIDS in
the region, to support inter-country partnerships, and to help
strengthen unity and solidarity in the region.

SEA-AIDS is supported by the Fondation du Present, the UNAIDS Asia
Pacific Inter-country Team and the United Nations Development Pro-
gramme.

ference coverage can be improved.
