Essential National Health Research is Imperative for African Nations
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear All,
Your attention is cordially drawn to the above titled report. It was
contributed on invitation to the newsletter of the Council for Health
Research for Development - "Research into Action". It appeared in
print in Issue No. 24, April - June 2001, p. 3 - 5.
Summary
In the report, an African health researcher puts forward the view
that the three core tenets of the Essential National Health Research
movement as defined by the Council for Health Research for Develop-
ment (COHRED) are imperative for wider adoption in Africa. These ten-
ets - Put people first, work for equity, translate results into ac-
tion for national development, are simple, sensible and endearing.
Their adoption by many African health researchers should help to make
research more relevant to local needs and development and endear re-
searchers to their respective local communities. To facilitate this
outcome and obtain the desired dividend, African health researchers
must re-commit to development oriented research questions and designs
as well as train in better communication and information dissemina-
tion skills. Such skills help to transform otherwise technical re-
ports into documents that local and foreign nationals can relate to
and use for better health empowerment.
