HealthNet News Special Edition - World AIDS Day
-----------------------------------------------
Dear colleagues,
Around the globe, World AIDS Day events are raising awareness of the ongoing AIDS epidemic. The theme this year is a direct call to governments to honor previous commitments made and devote all necessary resources to defeating AIDS, a disease that currently infects 3.5 million individuals worldwide. Our Special Edition this December 1st brings attention to a critical, proven prevention method that all too often is written out of government budgets: education. The environment in which children learn has proven to have a dramatic effect on their ability to prevent AIDS infection. Schools and teachers can transform children's lives by bringing them health education, gender-friendly classrooms, and life-skills lessons. Especially important is the continued inclusion of girls in educational settings. Educating girls is associated with a host of positive behavioral changes which have the potential to dramatically curb new AIDS infection rates. Health officials and schools need to work together to reap the benefits of providing each and every child with an education - and the knowledge to protect themselves from the epidemic that swirls around them.
This World AIDS Day we highlight the impact of a girl's education on HIV prevention, what makes a school a healthy environment for children, and examples of programs that have changed schools in health positive ways.
