HID questionnaires in French Spanish Swahili and Russian
--------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

this is to let you know that the short questionnaires relating to the
Health Information for Development (HID) project have been translated
into French, Russian, Spanish and Swahili. They are available from me
by e-mail <dvt@compuserve.com> and at our web site at the following
addresses:

English http://www.iwsp.org
French http://www.iwsp.org/lang/qfrench.asp
Russian http://www.iwsp.org/lang/qrussian.asp
Spanish http://www.iwsp.org/lang/qspanish.asp
Swahili http://www.iwsp.org/lang/qswahili.asp

PLEASE HELP US TO DOCUMENT HEALTH INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRES AROUND
THE WORLD, AND TO BUILD UP THE CASE FOR FUNDING TO STRENGTHEN THEIR
CAPACITY.

We need your input NOW. If you want to send these questionnaires out
to your friends in any kind of health centre (we have a very broad
definition) or network, please contact me <dvt@compuserve.com>. Ques-
tionnaires can be sent in by regular mail as well as electronically.

Summary of project:

The Health Information for Development project was launched in Janu-
ary 2000, and aims to compile a Global Directory of Health Informa-
tion Resource Centres by August 2000, working with a wide range of
partners throughout the world. Funding for this project has been pro-
vided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Children's Vaccine Program at
PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health). This is a phil-
anthropic, public domain project.

The Health Information for Development project is seen as the first
phase of the much-larger, US$ 45 million Information Waystations and
Staging Posts project, which aims to establish a global network of
1,000 health information resource centres that will provide locally
appropriate content on health issues. The project is intended to re-
inforce existing health services and education systems, not replace
them. Funding is currently being sought for this five-year project.

In the second phase, thus, we will upgrade selected resource centres
into Information Waystations and create a network. An Information
Waystation is a local point of access to health information received
electronically. It has a PC, CD-ROM & databases, printer, modem, re-
liable satellite or land telephone, and prepaid broadband Internet
access.

In the third phase, we will select some IWs for upgrading into Stag-
ing Posts, which will act as "relay stations", translating and adapt-
ing information materials in order to make them locally appropriate.

Maintenance and training will be provided in all cases.
