Impact of HIV/AIDS on labor market: younger workforce

From Kaiser RH News 6/2/00:

ILO ADDS TO GLOOM OVER IMPACT OF AIDS

The spread of HIV/AIDS threatens to devastate the working population
over the next 20 years, especially in countries in sub-Saharan Af-
rica, according to a forthcoming report from the International Labour
Organization (ILO) in Geneva. It suggests that economic growth rates
may be cut by as much as a quarter by 2020 as a result of the
HIV/AIDS pandemic in those countries because of deaths and illness
among workers in their most productive years. BY 2015 the population
of the 29 sub-Saharan countries is estimated to be 61 million lower
than it would have been without AIDS. As a result, the average age of
the workforce is set to fall by at least two years over the next 20
years in the area. In countries with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS
there will be about 11.5 million fewer people in the labour market;
child labour is likely to grow more serious as a result.
