Online Conference: The Economic Impact of HIV/AIDS
--------------------------------------------------

Macroeconomic, Sectoral, and Household-level Effects

What's the latest information on the economic impact of AIDS in the
developing world? Statistics from the Lusaka conference on AIDS show
us this:

1. AIDS is the leading cause of death for teachers in the Central Af-
rican Republic, causing the closing of more than 100 primary schools
between 1996 and 1998.

2. Teenage girls in four African towns were found to have a higher
HIV infection rate than teenage boys, ranging from 15-23%, compared
to 3-4%. Clearly, the girls were infected by older men, where the
prevalence for those older than 25 ranged between 26-40%.

3. Deaths from AIDS for teachers in Zambia have reached 4 to 5 per
day, with an overall mortality rate of 4%.

4. The World Bank has established a multi-disciplinary team called
AIDS Campaign Team for Africa (ACTAfrica), because "HIV/AIDS has re-
versed 20 years of progress in some countries."

Add to these facts the recent announcement that new HIV strains re-
sistant to HAART drugs have been identified, and it's clear to see
that the economic impact of AIDS in the developing world will have
serious implications.

What do you think the economic impact of HIV/AIDS is going to be?
What policies do you think governments should follow to mitigate the
impact? What interventions do you know of that worked (or didn't),
and why?

BEGINNING OCTOBER 12, share this information, and your thoughts, dur-
ing the USAID sponsored online conference: "The Economic Impact of
HIV/AIDS: Macroeconomic, Sectoral, and Household-level Effects." We
invite you to participate in discussing your ideas, presenting your
work on the issue, and posting publications, papers, data, and other
information to share with others who might find it useful.
