The Reproductive Health & HIV Research Unit (RHRU) is one of the
foremost South African research institutions primarily engaged
in research and training in the field of sexual and reproductive
health and HIV. The RHRU is an academic centre within the Uni-
versity of the Witwatersrand. The Wits Health Consortium (Pty)
Ltd (WHC), a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University
of the Witwatersrand, is the employer of RHRU staff. The WHC and

opportunities are based in Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital,
Soweto, Esselen Street Clinic, Hillbrow and Orange Farm - all
within the greater Johannesburg region.

Research Clinicians (x3)

The key focus will be to ensure the correct implementation of
microbicide, acute HIV, discordant couples and HSV2/HIV clinical
trial protocols.

Key responsibilities will include:

Coordinating all recruitment, clinical and data collection ac-
tivities on a daily basis in accordance with the relevant study
protocols, study specific manual and standard operating proce-
dures (SOPs);
Supervising all study specific clinic staff;
Clinical assessment and referral of participants who require
further medical management;
Where necessary participate in routine assessment of partici-
pants in accordance with relevant protocols;
Set up and maintain referral systems;
Responsibility for overall quality of trial implementation, in-
cluding quality control of case report forms, data collection
and storage of data according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
and relevant SOPs;
Control of recruitment and retention according to set targets;
Set up and maintain trial related documentation required by
regulatory authorities (Medical Controls Council, Ethics Review
Board);
Produce progress reports for donor/sponsors and for internal
use;
Training of clinical staff in clinical and research activities;
Ensure clinical management of participants is of high quality
and complies with HPCSA and RHRU standards;
Ensure communication and information sharing between this and
other trials and activities within the RHRU.
Other tasks as required in line with position.

Requirements:

Medical qualification with experience in clinical medicine;
Experience in the design and implementation of clinical
trial/research projects highly desirable;
Experience in sexual and reproductive health and/or women's
health an advantage;
Experience in STI management and obstetric & gynaecology an ad-
vantage;
Possession of, or studying towards, a postgraduate de-
gree/diploma in public health/epidemiology an advantage;
IT literate with proficiency in MS Office;
Valid driver's license and vehicle;
Understanding of, and commitment to, the development and deliv-
ery of sustainable sexual and reproductive health programmes for
all South Africans.
Ability to travel internationally and work on weekends as re-
quired.
