Postgraduate Diploma in Health Technology Management
----------------------------------------------------

University of Cape Town
Department of Biomedical Engineering

Participating Centre in MRC/WHO Collaborating Centre for Essential
Technologies in Health

INTRODUCTION

The Diploma forms part of a new programme in Health Technology Man-
agement for Developing Countries. This programme has been designed to
promote and support appropriate, affordable and sustainable health
technology management interventions which address the needs of devel-
oping countries, and the Sub-Saharan region in particular.

The programme is being offered in partnership with international mul-
tilateral and bilateral organisations and other regional stake-
holders.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN HEALTH TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT

The Diploma is targeted at health technology planners and policy-
makers, healthcare technical service managers and practitioners (both
public and private sector) and health service organisation managers.

The Diploma contains a mix of on-site and distance learning (a full
distance-learning option may also be offered). The Diploma is largely
modular in order to cater for needs of individual students. This is
in line with the trend towards open learning and continuing education
centred on the needs of the individual.

Students may register for individual courses, and may thereby accumu-
late credits towards the full Diploma, i.e. there are multiple entry
and exit points to and from the Diploma. Diploma requirements include
a project which would be completed within a "real-world" environment.

Students who successfully complete the Diploma may wish to continue
in the research area towards the MPhil or PhD qualifications (both by
dissertation only).

Courses will be run by international and regional experts with exten-
sive experience in the area of health technology management for de-
veloping countries.

The Diploma will be launched in 1998. The medium of instruction is
English.
