Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Technology Management

INTRODUCTION
The Diploma forms part of a new programme in Healthcare Technology
Management at the University of Cape Town. The Diploma is targeted at
healthcare technology planners, policy-makers and co-ordinators;
healthcare technology procurement officers; managers of healthcare
organisations and services; and healthcare technology practitioners,
be they managers, users or maintenance personnel.
CURRICULUM
The Curriculum consists of both compulsory core courses and optional
courses as follows:
Core courses:
- Healthcare Technology (HCT) Assessment
- HCT Planning & Acquisition
- HCT Utilisation & Maintenance
- Special Topics Introductory Course
- Project Management
Optional courses (choice of 3):
- Healthcare Orientation
- Clinical Engineering Practice
- Health Facilities Management
- Health Informatics & Computing
- Medical Equipment Design & Application
The Diploma curriculum is in keeping with WHO Resolutions and actions
directed at developing countries and also draws on the experiences of
governments and multilateral/bilateral organisations active in devel-
oping countries, and in particular the Sub-Saharan Region.
The curriculum will be presented initially in English. Diploma re-
quirements include an applied research project conducted in a 'real-
world' environment.
TIMETABLE FOR 1999
The Diploma contains a mix of on-site and distance-learning (by cor-
respondence &/or internet) and runs for 18 months, although partici-
pants are expected to be on-site for one 3-month block. The 1999 Di-
ploma programme will commence in mid-February. The 3-month full-time
block has not been finalised but is likely to be over the July-
October period.
APPLICATION/REGISTRATION
It is recommended that final applications be submitted by the middle
of February 1998.
TUITION FEES
The full Diploma fee for participants from countries within the
Southern African Development Community (SADC) is ZAR 9,700. For those
participants from countries outside SADC the fee is US$ 5,400.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Entry to the Diploma usually requires a first degree or equivalent.
Competencies acquired through non-formal learning may also be recog-
nised for purposes of admission to the Diploma. Potential applicants
are urged to contact the Programme Co-ordinator.
INDIVIDUAL COURSES
Individual courses may be taken by occasional students - fees are
available on request. Selected courses will be made available as full
distance-learning options, obviating the need for students to travel
to Cape Town.
REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT
The Diploma has received support from the AFTH (African Federation
for Technology in Healthcare) and the Flanders Government - the Dis-
tance-Learning infrastructure has recently been set up by colleagues
from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, under a Flanders Government Min-
istry of Education project.
