The University of the Witwatersrand’s Faculty of Health Sciences, is dedicated to build capacity in proposal writing (also known as grant writing) in response to local and international funding opportunities. The Faculty is inviting applications from individuals working at academic, research and non-governmental organisations in South Africa and the Africa region for enrolment into the next Proposal Writing Training Course.

This course is designed to equip participants with managerial skills to meet competitive demands of proposal writing in response to local and international funding opportunities. Proposal writing skills are of particular relevance to senior researchers who are interested in establishing research groups with the capacity for repeated grant funding.

COURSE CONTENT:
A selection from the following list of topics will be covered in the final programme depending on participants’ needs and interests:
* Essential Steps in Preparing a Proposal for Funding
* Perspectives of Successful Proposal Writing from Experienced Grant Writers
* Sources of Grant Funding
* Panel Discussion with Funders and Reviewers of Proposals on What to Look for in “Good Proposals”
* Reworking existing proposals to meet expectations of funding agencies
* Dealing with rejection in grant writing
* Formulation of Work Plans and Budgets
* Monitoring and Evaluation for Effective Project Implementation
* Leadership and Grantsmanship – Teamwork for Leading Research Groups in Collaborative and Large Inter-disciplinary research projects
* Networking with other participants from the SADC Region

DATES: The dates for the course are 1 to 4 August, 2006

FEES: The course fees are R2,500.00 per applicant. Please note that this only covers tuition fees and does not include accommodation and transport to the course venue.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY: The Proposal Writing Training Course (PWTC) is planned for 25 mid-career researchers, academics and project managers. The PWTC is not a research methodology course and participants are required to have fully fledged proposals as materials for exercises during the course. Participants are expected to take responsibility for their own learning through revision of their proposals. There will be minimal didactic teaching.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
* Each student will be expected to contribute effectively to class exercises, discussions and critical appraisals.
* Presentation of own proposal in plenary to obtain feedback on its further development.
* Students who complete all modules are eligible to receive a Certificate of Attendance of the University of the Witwatersrand.

LIMITED FELLOWSHIPS: A limited number of Fellowships are available through the Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC) to attend the course. The proposal needs to be in the field of HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis or Malaria to qualify for a Belgian Technical Cooperation fellowship.
