Proposal Writing Training Course - HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

This course is designed to equip researchers with managerial
skills to meet competitive demands of proposal writing in re-
sponse to local and international funding opportunities. Pro-
posal writing skills is of particular interest to researchers
who intend to establish research groups/entities with the capac-
ity for repeated grant funding.
Through a generous donation from the Belgian Embassy, Professor
Stephen Chandiwana, Head, Graduate Studies, Faculty of Health
Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand is delighted to an-
nounce a short training course on Proposal Writing in the Field
of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria from the 25- 28th March
2004
ON OFFER:
A selection of one or more of the following topics will be cov-
ered in the final programme depending on participants� needs and
interests:
* Essential steps in proposal writing including formulation of
budgets
* Perspectives of successful proposal writing from experienced
grant writers
* Case studies on collaborative and inter-disciplinary research
and projects
* Effectively managing grants involving local and international
partnerships
* Developing research proposals in the field of HIV/AIDS, Tuber-
culosis and Malaria
* Reworking existing proposals to meet expectations of funding
agencies
* Dealing with rejection in grant writing
* The role of postgraduate training in proposal writing
* A review of sources of grant funding for proposals in the
field of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria
* Panel discussion by funders and reviewers of research on what
to look for in �good proposals�
* Team work for joint and large interdisciplinary proposals
* Networking to enhance success rates in proposal writing
FEES:
No charge for Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) academics who
clearly articulate a motivation and demonstrated benefit from
the training. The fee, to include tuition, board and materials,
for non-FHS academics is ZAR 2,500/person.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY:
The Proposal Writing Training Course (PWTC) is planned for 20
mid-career researchers and academics interested in the field of
HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Teaching will be done by ex-
perienced local and regional facilitators from the SADC region
that will be responsible for the course material. The final pro-
gramme will be based on the needs of the participants who are
expected to take responsibility for their own learning by doing.
There will be minimal didactic teaching.

20 places are available and these will be allocated on a first-
