PROPOSED YOUTH ACTIVITIES FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
AIDS AND STIs IN AFRICA (ICASA 2005), ABUJA, NIGERIA.

1. ICASA 2005 Youth Secretariat
1) To build up and develop the Conference youth programme
2) To handle correspondence related to youth activities at ICASA
2005
3) To serve as a center for information dissemination on youth
activities at ICASA 2005
4) To manage the Youth scholarship programme
2. Pre-Conference Activities
1) Workshops/Trainings: To empower youth delegates with specific
skills for effective participation in the conference and beyond,
on issues such as:
-Economic empowerment
-Advocacy skills
-Interventions and programming strategies for: OVCs, PMPCT,
RPs, ARVs and ender issues in HIV/AIDS
- Peer Education and Counseling
3. Youth Village
Space for youth activities during the Conference such as:
-Workshops
-Satellite meetings
-IT area
-Networking
-Exhibition
-Youth focused abstract sessions
-Youth skills building
-Symposium/ Debates
4. Youth Forum
1) To provide a meeting place for all young people attending the
conference to learn the conference process, meet each other,
share updates on HIV/AIDS interventions in their countries and
identify potential forums within the conference programme that
suit their interest.
2) Create a permanent arena for youth in the conference that
will continue into the future.
3) Address the problems of youth infected and affected by HIV by
offering "for youth by the youth" solutions
4) Help youth exchange ideas and experiences in order to learn
and share with others.
5) Develop an African youth network that is connected to African
and International AIDS communities.
6) Cultivate and train youth leaders in the fight against HIV as
peer educators, counselors and care givers.
5. Youth Marathon / Walk
To raise awareness or create advocacy on an HIV/AIDS issue to be
decided upon e.g. access to ARV, increased political commitment
from governments, combating stigma and discrimination, HIV/AIDS
and the Girl Child, Children orphaned by HIV/AIDS etc.
6. Youth Media and Newsletter
Young journalists from around Africa will be brought together to
work with the conference media center to capture youth specific
events and activities and come up with a daily newsletter at the
conference.
7. Leadership Forum
An opportunity for youth to meet with selected leaders from all
spheres of life (government, development community, media, busi-
ness etc) to share ideas and experiences and to identify mentors
for the future efforts.
8. Youth Activities during the Opening / Closing Ceremonies
-Youth speaker at the opening and closing ceremonies
-A performance by the youth during the opening and closing
ceremonies
9. Closing Forum
1) To discuss and highlight issues from the Conference and how
lessons gained can be shared to other young people.
2) To discussion and present a post conference follow-up agenda
and determine African youth intervention in Toronto 2006 IAC.
10. Live Broadcast of Activities
To broadcast youth activities on television and on the Internet
for youths across the African region who are unable to attend
the conference to follow-up on events and make inputs online.
11. Conference Bags
The Youth arm of PLWAs involved in arts and crafts would prepare
youth bags and other conference materials for youth partici-
pants.
