Life Skills Planning Course (8th - 19th August 2005) 2 Weeks:
Cost US$ 480

OBJECTIVES

* Build capacity of trainers to train other trainers on life
skills and how to deal with their own value conflicts before
they can assist youth to do so;

* Provide adolescents in Africa with an opportunity to learn
more about themselves, their interests, strengths, family and
personal values and the factors that influence their feelings
about themselves;

* Assist youth in Africa to establish goals and make decisions
related to future work and parenthood and to encourage them to
achieve their goals;

* Increase adolescents' knowledge in three areas: sexuality,
planning for a family and communication.

* STIs/HIV/AIDS
* Harmful traditional practices
* Substance use and Abuse

Guidance and Counselling Course (22nd August - 2nd September
2005) 2 Weeks Cost US$ 480

This course is designed to provide opportunities for the par-
ticipants to develop critical and informed understanding of
guidance and counselling issues and practice.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

The course is aimed at:
* Enabling participants to identify the role of guidance and
counselling in the helping profession

* Equipping the participants with knowledge, basic counselling
skills and attitudes necessary to facilitate counselling inter-
vention in a variety of settings

* Developing strategies for implementing or improving guidance
and counselling interventions in their workplaces

TARGET GROUP

The course is designed for middle level personnel in public,
private sectors, Non-Governmental Organisations and other agen-
cies. It is put together for health related personnel including
nurses, community health workers, doctors, and clinical offi-
cers. It is also very useful for teachers both in schools and
colleges, church leaders, human resources personnel in organisa-
tions and social development workers.

COURSE DURATION

The course is designed to take two weeks.

CONTENT
The following units will be covered:

1. Guidance and counselling concepts
2. Introduction to counselling psychology
3. Counsellor and the process of counselling
4. Basic counselling skills
5. Crisis intervention and trauma

CERTIFICATION

The participants to each of the courses will be awarded an AMREF
certificate of participation stipulating the topics covered.

Being our very close collaborators we are extending 5 sponsor-
ships in each of the above stated courses. The sponsorship en-
tails the tuition fees as indicated on each. During the course
AMREF will provide course participants with lunch, tea and all
learning materials and stationery. You are free to nominate par-
ticipants who will be selected on the basis of appropriateness
of the course to your organisation and the individual's capac-
ity. Please note all nominations must come from the organiza-
tions individual applications are not acceptable. Also note that
we cannot give more than one sponsorship to an organisation.

Deadline for receiving all nominations is Friday 22nd July 2005.
