Staging Posts (31)
------------------
Hello:
Please forgive me, but I would like to share a comment on this fine
project:
In a city not far from where I live, a small organisation [non-profit]
has begun a program to accept old computers, parts, and to make usable
computer equipment for those less fortunate. Their particular program
is based on thinking that people who know nothing about computers, are
illiterate to the point of not being able to read or write, but would
like to learn, can volunteer their time in return for credits that will
eventually entitle them to a computer of their own.
This program is located in the U.S., where gold lines the streets. We
do not have the scale of illiteracy, or lack of computers that is expe-
rienced in developing countries, but there are parallels to be drawn.
First and foremost, people are people, everywhere. The desire to own a
computer, to learn, and to be creative in problem solving are not dis-
tinguishable across the globe.
I would hope that the Staging Posts Project not for even a moment, con-
sider itself limited in scope. The concept is simply and elegantly di-
rected to providing health-related information throughout the develop-
ing countries, and primary to this goal is the distribution of equip-
ment and supplies to make this possible. Institutional patronage of
knowledge is an unacceptable philosophy, and it is important that the
pure joy of helping others meet their immediate, as well as long term
goals not be stifled with weak excuses for not acting.
I would like to see every avenue available for pursuit of this concept,
i.e., Staging Posts encouraged. If there is anyone who would be inter-
ested in obtaining a computer and backup power supply for their commu-
nity "kiosk" project in a developing country of their choice, please
feel free to post a request.
Thanks, Tom
