Street Children Info Request (2)
--------------------------------
Dear Colleagues,
The Comminit "Soul Beat Africa" team has asked for people and
organizations to send information about work with street chil-
dren. Perhaps you could also copy me at the Afrifund Database...
mailto:peterb@afrifund.com
The goal with the Afrifund Database is to get "on the record" as
much as possible of the development activities and health and
HIV-AIDS and education interventions that are going on around
the SOUTH. The big organizations are visible, but the smaller
and the informal organizations are not. Yet it is often the
smaller and informal organizations that are doing the most with
the least... and they are potentially a big part of the answer
to better use of scarce development (and health and education)
resources. So we want, as a first step, to get these organiza-
tions "on the record". The key information we need is basic...
names, street address, city, countr, mail address, email contact
if possible, telephone, description of activities. More informa-
tion would be useful... but we just want to make a start in this
phase, and then follow up later to get more information.
This initiative is not "competing" with the CommInit activity.
Their goal (as I understand it) is to get better use of informa-
tion by sharing it... a very worthwhile thing to do. Our goal is
to create a database of "management information" that will help
decision makers in development (and health and education) make
better decisions. In our case the information is going to be or-
ganized so that it is the most useful for decision making....
and we do not want to leave out the small and informal and good
as we build this information.
Nor do we want to "compete" with the various database initia-
tives that are already in place. We want to be able to cooperate
so the information is used effectively for decision making.
And of course the biggest decision is whether or not an organi-
zation is going to get funding or not... and we want to be help-
ful in making that decision positive where it is justified.
I hope you can help, and in turn I hope we can help.
Sincerely,
Peter Burgess
