Requests for Information about HIV/AIDS Prevention (3)
------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
Hello and apologies for the incorrect URL, and the "Ghost in the Ma-
chine" (on Halloween, no less!) which sent 4-5 emails to everyone!
The first had the incorrect URL, and I realized that just as I was
sending it, so tried to abort that and then send a corrected URL. It
looks like all of you got both e-mails, and the latter 3-4 times,
about which I am very sorry. Wanted to make sure everyone knew that
the URL as Dieter has listed it is correct (http://www.remedyinc.org)!
Also, there is a medical-supply and medication-recycling program
called Slum Doctor which operates in Nairobi and possibly elsewhere.
Please contact Timothy Costello <timothydcostello@hotmail.com> for
more information.
On the question of child rights, I have found an excellent website
for that, which is http://www.anppcan.org , for the organization
ANPPCAN, or African Network for Prevention and Protection Against
Child Abuse and Neglect, and they have many excellent links and re-
sources. They have recently been associated with the Africamix Festi-
val (as have we in Kenya), which seeks to utilize the arts to address
child abuse, welfare, and rights. Please see Africamix at
http://www.africamix.com . One speaker at Africamix-Kenya was Millie
Odhiambo, I believe, from the organization Child Rights Advisory and
Legal Centre (CRADLE). Please contact her at <millieodhiambo@yahoo.com>
and she might be able to help.
There is an interesting study I ran across of how this has been ap-
plied in Zimbabwe, which has ratified both the International Conven-
tion on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights
and Welfare of the Child (as have most if not all African countries,
I believe, including Kenya, where KAIPPG operates). It is at
http://www.childwatch.uio.no
There is also a great if sobering study on child rights and abuse in
Kenya at the Human Rights Watch site (http://www.hrw.org), called
"Kenya: Children in the Shadow of AIDS". In Kenya you might also try
KAACR, which is at <kaacr@kaacr.com> , and Learning and Development
Kenya (Philip Ndeta, Director) at <learning@africaonline.co.ke>
By the way, the e-address I have for the Children's Law Center of
Kenya (who asked this question) is incorrect, so hope someone can
supply that: I have <clck@37.com> . You might also try George On-
yango, Festival Coordinator for Africamix-Kenya, at <geogias@yahoo.com>
or <george@africamix.com>, as he works with youth directly.
I have been involved in a Yale Law School project which drafted model
human-rights legislation regarding women and children affected / in-
fected by HIV/AIDS, so there is undoubtedly some great info which
might be available as a result of this work, and I will check into
that further.
Hope this is helpful, and that all the URLs are correct. And that you
only receive the info once!
With many thanks and all best wishes,
Janet Feldman,
